On a chilly Christmas morning in rural Gawain, he is awakened by his lover who lives in a brothel. his girlfriend Essel is just an ordinary woman in contrast to Gawain who is still blood related to the king he is the nephew of King Arthur who instead of being a knight but is busy getting drunk and going to brothels almost every night. when in the morning he will return to the camelet of the building which is still part of the palace, Gawain is immediately scolded by his mother, Guineverre, has just returned and is not there on Christmas Eve, Gawain comes home not long after he immediately cleans himself and puts on his best clothes to attend the party at the round table with his uncle King Arthur, as a nephew it was only natural for Gawain to be there he was even suddenly asked to sit at King Arthur's right. Christmas Day at the same time in the camelet tower Mrs. Gawain was getting ready to start her magic ritual when the Christmas party started. At the round table, the magic ritual began too. The ritual summons a mysterious Green Knight Knight who uninvitedly barges into the palace in his tree-like form.
He came handing over a letter which the queen read to him like in a trance, the letter stating that any knight could try to harm him and the one who succeeded would win his green axe. This will be a sign of the fame and fortune that the victor can have. But in exchange the winner had to travel to the green capel the following year to get the same strike as a fair deal. Gawain without thinking and not paying attention to King Arthur's worries finally accepted the challenge. King Arthur gave him a royal sword to fight the Knight, strangely when they had faced each other the Knight instead gave himself up and put his ax on the ground gave it to Gawaing at that time Gawain was confused with what to do so he thought of chopping off the Knight's Head. not long after that the Knight got up and took his severed head, He recalled the agreement at the beginning that it was Gawain who had to meet him later at the Green Capel then he left carrying his head laughing with satisfaction Gawain had fun all year he has been known as one of the Knights . Many people talked about it and thought that Gawain would become a great legend in the region.
time flies very fast almost a year the time Gawain to meet the Knight is getting closer King Arthur personally meets Gawain at his house he reminds Gawain to meet the challenge the Green Knight is getting closer. Gawain had to keep going, he rode his horse to the Green Capel with the Green Knight's ax and wore the green belt his mother had given him, the enchanted belt. everyone prepares for Gawain's departure the king and queen Arthur pray for him the priest reads a prayer for the ax and shield that will be Gawain. that Mrs. Gawain is sure that her son will return home safely and by wearing the belt, Gawain will not suffer too much.
Gawain's journey finally began slowly, riding his horse away from the kingdom's territory while on the way he thought of his lover Essel who asked to be married if it was Gawain who managed to return home safely from the green chapel.l His journey was not too lonely because of these warm memories. But Gawain's journey was not as easy as he thought. . First he found a human skeleton at a crossroads hanging in a very small iron cage, then he unexpectedly crossed a road that had become a battlefield and was filled with dead soldiers in that bloodshed field, Gawain met a boy who suddenly spoke with him he asked Gawain's destination and said that he could take Gawain to the green chapel but the boy asked for something in return. It was Gawain who gave him a coin and then left in the direction the boy was pointing alone. Not long after that when Gawain reached the bank of the river and headed into the forest the boy who had shown the direction to ambush him with two of their friends snatched the belt ax and horse from Gawain. After that Gawain who was tied up and left alone he tried to crawl to pick up the sword that was left behind even though he had to struggle first and hurt his hand. Gawain was able to cut the rope that bound his hands and body. his only thought when he was released was that he would have to go after the thief boys and take back what had been stolen. he also did an aimless search in the forest which was getting dark and foggy. Night had arrived at the place, Gawain ran until he arrived at the edge of the lake, he accidentally found the cottage that was being abandoned by the owner and fell asleep there. He hadn't been lying on the bed for a long time. When a young woman named Winnyfred suddenly appeared and woke him up, Winnifred asked Gawain to retrieve something that was missing from a nearby spring. Gawain realizes that Winniefred is a ghost, a ghost who died because he was killed by people who wanted to rape him. He couldn't leave in peace because his body was not intact and his head was in the spring. Winifred asked Gawain to take it. Actually it was Gawain who asked what he would receive in return but Winny refused. Even so, Gawain went down into the spring, picked up Winni's skull at the bottom of the pool and brought it up to the surface. At that time Gawain wanted to see a fox look at him outside the house and then leave. Gawain decides to re-enter the hut returning the skull to the skeletal remains lying on the mattress in exchange for Winifred returning the ax to him.
The journey was continued again with Gawain carrying an ax in his hand and he continued to head north following a long river that led him. When he took shelter, the fox he had previously seen in the hut met Gawain again. They seemed to have become friends because the fox continued to follow Gawain's journey. a journey that was not at all easy Gawain slipped many times. He was starving thirsty and of course exhausted. His physical condition began to weaken but this did not dampen his steps to keep walking according to his agreement between the valleys he saw giant humans walking in one direction. Gawain called them for help to cross the wide valley, one of them looked at him trying to take Gawain but the fox who was accompanying him suddenly stopped and said something that maybe only they could understand. Gawain didn't understand but he certainly didn't get help he still had to walk on his own feet across the wide valley. Fatigue completely filled his body he couldn't even walk straight anymore his body wobbled his legs limp and when night fell he reached a castle inhabited by God, too bad when Gawain entered the door he immediately fainted. Gawain only came to his senses the next morning when the sea gleamed across his face with a blowing cloth. Lord confessed that he knew a lot about Gawain. He also met the May Lady, a woman who resembled Essel. at the dining table at breakfast Lord also said that the Green Chapel was near. Gawain, who could stay for a while to recover his strength, accepted the offer. The lady gave a book as a Christmas present and also painted a portrait of Gawain in her own way.
In the evening the Lord spoke to Gawain asking him to promise to give what he got from the house and in return the Lord would give him the best he could get from the forest while he was hunting. the next time the old woman who had been in Lord's castle with her eyes closed and always silent suddenly came to Gawain's room and rubbed her forehead just like Gawain's mother did to her when she was at home. Gawain didn't understand but he ended up sleeping very soundly that night. The next morning, Lady gives him a green belt which she says she made herself but in return Lady asks for something in return, sexually seduces him but Gawain chooses to escape into the forest and meet God, saying he will collect the promise he has made and take what Gawain has made. get from lady not a green belt but a kiss. instead God returned the fox that had been accompanying Gawainn the fox was trapped in the trap he had made. after leaving the Lord's Castle Gawain finally reached the river where a boat seemed to have been prepared to wait for him. the fox who was walking with him suddenly intercepted Gawain, which surprised him again. He spoke, the fox warned Gawain that if he went to the green chapel then disaster would befall him. There would be no mercy let alone a happy ending, the fox both scared him and teased him. If indeed Gawain who was not afraid of what was being faced should he be able to let go of the green belt around his waist Gawain refused, the fox was chased away. Guin continued his journey alone while rowing the boat. In the middle of the river fog accompanied his journey until he arrived at the very end of the river that could be passed by boat. He continued his journey on foot it didn't take long. He arrived at the Green capel where Gawain saw the Knight sitting in his long hibernation. Christmas wasn't here yet so Gawain waited all night and found Green up finally waking up on Christmas morning. Green Knight greeted him warmly. when the Knight finally came down from the meditation and hibernation place Greenknight took the ax that Gawain had left on the stairs, he then asked Gawain to kneel down to have his head chopped off as Gawain had done in the palace to attack the Green Knight.
Just when the ax was about to be swung by Green knight, the fear within Gawain made his instincts push him to dodge the attack. Green Knight rebuked his actions during the tense moments Gawain wanted to give himself some time to calm down. On the second swing of the ax Gawain dodged again, his body away from the Green Knight. Then on the third swing he imagined that he would choose to escape from the Green Chapel to find his lost horse had reappeared on the bank of the river. Then Gawain decided to go home by riding him running away from his own agreement and promise. His mother welcomed Gawain who worriedly even though her son was not hurt at all Gawain was also finally crowned as a candidate for King to replace Arthur who was old and starting to get sick.
After Arthur officially died Gawain ascended the throne in the presence of many Knights and his people were still in Gawain's daydream, he saw Essel had given birth to his son but Gawain instead left Essel, took the son and married a noblewoman. instead Gawain educates his son in his care, when his son grows up and engages in battle his son dies of grievous wounds. The impact of the death of the Son of his people reviled Gawain to the fullest in the presence of Essel who became a victim of his selfishness. even years later, Gawain had become a failed king. he was not only reviled by his own people, he even made his kingdom collapse due to losing the war as a result of being besieged by the enemy and his family in the end left him.
when only Gawain was left alone at the stop there his king took off the green sash he had not removed since he wore it. just as the belt fell off his head automatically cut off and fell from his body. the very tragic ending of his life story but it made Gawain realize that he couldn't rely on the magic of that belt. he had to act like a knight in his life even if it meant even if he had to be decapitated and had no happy ending so when Gawain really woke up from the Daydream where the Green Knight started to swing his ax he asked for time once again still on his knees Gawain unbuckled his belt from his body and only said he was ready to fulfill the agreement after the belt was untied, his actions actually touched the Green Knight. He praised Gawain for being a brave knight. then touched his finger to Gawain's neck signaling as if he had beheaded Gawain. Knight then said "Now go with your head" and he smiled kindly and the film was over.
